The Dunkirk City School District encourages extra-curricular activities for students. We believe that athletics is an extension of the classroom and contributes greatly to the overall education of our students. Athletics teaches our students qualities that are necessary to achieve throughout their lives including, self-discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, and competitiveness.
The Dunkirk City School District’s Program is based on sound educational principles. Through the physical education program, intramurals, and interscholastic athletics, we offer all students an opportunity to grow, develop, and achieve to their potentials. We expect that all students in our programs will develop to their maximum physical, mental, and social potentials.
We feel that athletics allow students who have demonstrated a desire for further development, the opportunity to participate on a higher level of skill and competition. At the earliest levels, skill development and broad participation are emphasized. As students progress through the program, more advanced and rigorous competition necessitate higher skill levels, and a more selective process of choosing participants.
Dunkirk athletic teams participate in the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association (CCAA) Division I in Section VI. Our teams are competitive in our league and conference. In addition, our students are often recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) for achieving Scholar-Athlete status. Dunkirk City School District also is fortunate to have an outstanding tradition of athletic excellence and outstanding coaches and student-athletes. We are committed to the individual growth for each of our athletic program participants, by facilitating excellence in citizenship, academics, sportsmanship and athletic skills.
Our mission is to provide students with the opportunity to positively represent our school and community in a wide range of quality interscholastic programs. Our program objectives are to see that the highest standards of athletic competition are maintained throughout the program while ensuring that our primary responsibility is to the student participants in the program. We strive to provide an opportunity for the complete development of the student-athlete - personally, socially, academically, and athletically.
